JOHANNESBURG (December 19, 2000) - The National Department of Agriculture was cited as saying on Tuesday that a fungal disease known as Karnal bunt has been detected for the first time on a South African wheat farm and a quarantine has been implemented. The department, the Agricultural Research Council and organised agriculture would try to establish the extent of the infected area on a farm in the Northern Cape, it said. "They will conduct a delimiting survey to establish the extent of the infected area and of infected seed stocks, establish future control measures and provide information regarding Karnal bunt," it said.
