The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of potato rot nematode (PRN) (Ditylenchus destructor) of garlic bulbs grown on a small farming operation in the Ottawa region of Ontario.
CFIA, in collaboration with the affected land owner and producer, have implemented strict quarantine measures on the affected property, which includes movement prohibitions on soil and restrictions on the end use of any harvested plant materials from the infested field to prevent the spread of this pest. The investigation into the source and the extent of the infestation is ongoing as the CFIA works together with affected stakeholders.
Under IPPC Standards (e.g. ISPM No. 8), the status of PRN in Canada is considered present (only in some areas) and under official control.
