Report: On April 25, 2014, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) laboratory confirmed the presence of hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), Adelges tsugae, on samples submitted from a hemlock tree located in the Niagara Glen Nature Reserve (on the Niagara River), Ontario. The pest was found on a single tree, within close proximity (less than 10 m away) to the 2013 find. This site is already under a Notice of Prohibition of Movement, imposed after the initial detection in May 2013. A delimitation survey is planned for this site and will take place in mid to late May, 2014. Control measures will be taken to ensure the continued pest-free status of Eastern Canada.
Under IPPC standards (ISPM No. 8), HWA is considered present only in British Columbia and is subject to official control in Canada.
