Report: The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has confirmed the presence of apple maggot, Rhagoletis pomonella, in the City of Prince George in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George, British Columbia (BC). There is no commercial apple production in this area of BC.

Though native to North America and has been a serious pest of apples in Canada for over 100 years, the apple maggot is a regulated pest, in Canada. Apple fruits and apple trees in areas where this pest have been detected are subject to regulatory control. Apple maggot can spread rapidly if moved by people. The public can play a key role in helping to control the spread of this pest by not moving potentially infested materials such as apple fruits, apple trees, fruit containers, and soil.

The CFIA continues to work with federal, provincial, and municipal governments towards preventing the spread of apple maggot into tree fruit production areas of British Columbia.
