Report: In early May, five hemlock trees at a private residence in Etobicoke, Ontario, were confirmed infested with Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The trees were imported from a nursery located in an infested US state in 1999, grown in a nursery and sold to the property owner in 2005. The five trees were removed and incinerated on June 1, 2012. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has collaborated with local and provincial partners in the removal and disposal of the infested trees on the property.
Delimitation surveys covering a 500 m radius around the infestation were conducted, but no additional infestations were found.
Trace back survey activities to the originating nursery were conducted, and no additional infestations were found.
Trace forward survey activities for hemlock trees sold from the same lot were conducted, and no additional infestations were found.
Follow-up surveys for HWA will resume in 2013 to verify these eradication efforts were successful and to ensure the continued pest-free status of Eastern Canada.
Under IPPC standards (e.g. ISPM No. 8), HWA is considered present only in British Columbia and is subject to official control in Canada.
