Report:
Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura), the spotted wing drosophila, is a native of Asia, including Burma, China, India, Japan, Korea, and Thailand. A pest of temperate fruits, it lays eggs in ripe or nearly ripe soft-skinned fruits including: Fragaria, Rubus, Ribes, Prunus, Pyrus and Vitis.
D. suzukii was detected for the first time in Canada in 2009. It was found at three locations in British Columbia: Vancouver, the lower Fraser Valley and at a single site in Kelowna. The pest was associated with blueberry (Vaccinium), blackberry (Rubus), raspberry (Rubus), grape (Vitis), cherry (Prunus) and dogwood (Cornus kousa).
In accordance with the standards of the International Plant Protection Convention, D. suzukii is considered to be a pest that is “present, under investigation”.
