Title: Eradication of Phytophthora ramorum from a nursery in British Columbia Canada / Éradication de Phytophthora ramorum dans une pépinière de la Colombie-Britannique, au Canada.

Report:

On June 11th , 2003, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) detectected P. ramorum on Rhododendron plants at a plant nursery in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada. As part of an official follow-up of imported material, the CFIA sampled plants at the nursery in late April. Once identified as infected, on June 12th the infected block was destroyed. The movement of related plant material in the nursery was then traced to determine the origin and spread of the infection. All host materials at the infected nursery was placed under regulatory control for a period of 90 days. During the control period, the plants, soil and water at the facility continue to be sampled and tested. In total, 2844 samples from 13 nurseries, 8 landscape sites, a parks department, and lands adjacent to the infected nursery was collected. Of the samples taken, five Rhododendrons in the initial block of plants (destroyed on June 12th) were identified as being infected with the disease. On September 9th 2003, the nursery was released from quarantine as no new infections had been detected. It remains unclear as to the origin of the disease in British Columbia. It is apparent however, that the infection was detected at an early stage and eradication efforts have been successful. CFIA continues to sample other Canadian nurseries as part of a national P. ramorum survey plan. No infections have been detected at other Canadian nurseries.

Le 11 juin 2003, l’Agence canadienne d’inspection des aliments (ACIA) a découvert la présence de P. ramorum dans des plants de rhododendron d’une pépinière de Richmond (Colombie-Britannique), au Canada. À la fin d’avril, l’ACIA avait échantillonné des plants de la pépinière dans le cadre d’un suivi officiel du matériel importé. Une fois la présence de l’infection confirmée, le bloc infecté a été détruit, le 12 juin. Les déplacements du matériel végétal associé présent dans la pépinière ont par la suite été retracés, afin de déterminer l’origine et la propagation de l’infection. Tout le matériel hôte de la pépinière infestée a été mis sous contrôle réglementaire pendant une période de 90 jours. Durant cette période, des échantillons de végétaux, de sol et d’eau ont été prélevés dans la pépinière pour fins d’analyse. Au total, 2 844 échantillons ont été prélevés dans 13 pépinières, 8 terrains paysagers, un service des parcs ainsi que les terrains adjacents à la pépinière infestée. Parmi ces échantillons, cinq rhododendrons provenant du bloc initial de végétaux (détruit le 12 juin) se sont révélés infectés. Le 9 septembre 2003, l’avis de quarantaine a été levé pour la pépinière, aucun autre plant infecté n’ayant été découvert. On ignore toujours l’origine de cette infection apparue en Colombie-Britannique. Il ne fait toutefois aucun doute que l’infection a été détectée à un stade précoce et que les mesures d’éradication ont porté fruit. L’ACIA poursuit l’échantillonnage d’autres pépinières canadiennes dans le cadre d’un plan national d’enquête sur P. ramorum. Aucune infection n’a été découverte dans d’autres pépinières canadiennes.
