Report:
Effective immediately, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is amending the Karnal bunt quarantine areas in Arizona to remove 32,189 acres in Maricopa County, including 9,281 acres of Gila River Indian Community tribal land, and 1,898 acres located in Pinal County from the list of regulated areas in Arizona.
Following completion of the 2011 Karnal Bunt National Survey, it was determined that certain areas in Maricopa and Pinal Counties in Arizona meet all requirements of the APHIS Karnal bunt eradication program. Accordingly, restrictions on the interstate movement of Karnal bunt regulated articles from these areas are no longer required.
APHIS will follow this emergency action with the publication of an Interim Rule in the Federal Register.
Under IPPC standards, Tilletia indica is considered to be a pest that is present in portions of three counties in Arizona (La Paz, Maricopa, and Pinal) and is under eradication in the United States.
