Report:
Effective immediately, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is revoking a Federal Order that established a Gladiolus Rust (Uromyces transversalis; GR) quarantine area for an affected commercial gladiolus farm in Hendry County, Florida. The regulatory action was necessary to mitigate the risk of interstate movement of GR, which was confirmed on gladiolus plants in the production fields and packinghouse in early 2008. After following the conditions of the Federal Order and the associated Federal compliance agreement for two production seasons, the commercial farm has remained free of GR. As a result, APHIS is declaring GR eradicated from the regulated area.
Gladiolus rust is a plant pathogen of quarantine significance in the United States that primarily attacks hybrid cultivars of gladiolus grown for flower production and if established or transported into greenhouses or nurseries could significantly impact gladiolus crops in the United States. GR is not widely prevalent or distributed within the United States.
Under IPPC standards, Uromyces transversalis is considered to be a quarantine pest that is absent: eradicated from Hendry County, Florida in the United States.
