Report: The cotton seed bug, Oxycarenus hyalinipennis, is a serious pest of cotton with a nearly worldwide distribution, excluding North America. In the 1990s, this pest was found in the West Indies (http://www.pestalert.org/viewArchNewsStory.cfm?nid=181). In January 2010, the cotton seed bug was detected for the first time in Salinas, Puerto Rico. In addition to cotton (Gossypium), hosts include the following genera: Abutilon, Cola, Eriodendron, Malva, Sphaeralcea, Hibiscus, Pavonia, Sida, Dombeya, Sterculia, and Triumfetta.
Under IPPC Standards, Oxycarenus hyalinipennis is considered to be a pest that is present: only in some areas of Puerto Rico.
