A single adult and some larvae of the European grapevine moth, Lobesia botrana, have been detected in the Oakville region of Napa County. This is the first known detection of this pest in the United States.
The Napa County Department of Agriculture is working with the USDA and the California Department of Food and Agriculture to trap and survey for additional moths in the area. Regulatory actions are under review.
Studies of the European grapevine moth show that larvae feed primarily on the flowers and fruit of grape. Other hosts include olives, blackberries, cherries, nectarines, persimmons and pomegranates.
Under IPPC Standards, Lobesia botrana is considered to be a pest that is transient, actionable, and under surveillance in the United States.
