Report:
In May 2006, six adult male peach fruit flies, Bactrocera zonata, were detected in Fresno County, California. On June 2, 2006 APHIS established a quarantine to prevent the spread of the peach fruit fly. As a result of these detections, trap densities were increased to delimitation protocol levels and the California Department of Food and Agriculture treated a 25-mile-square area surrounding the detections with a male annihilation treatment that was repeated at two week intervals.
Based upon the peach fruit fly life cycle projection model, the completion of the third generation from the last detection date in the quarantine area is July 28, 2006. As per the peach fruit fly action plan, eradication can be declared after the completion of the projected third life cycle generation. Therefore, APHIS is rescinding the Federal Domestic Order issued on June 2, 2006, and removing the quarantine areas for peach fruit fly in Fresno and Madera Counties, California.
