Report: On January 2010, the Plant Health General Directorate in Mexico received samples of yam bean (Pachyrhizus erosus) from the municipality of Escarcega, State of Campeche, which showed signs and symptoms of Asian soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Samples were tested and processed by staff of the mycological laboratory of the Plant Health General Directorate, National Centre for Phytosanitary Reference. They did an analysis on reproductive structures with a compound microscope, as well as molecular analysis, obtaining positive results for the fungi Phakopsora pachyrhizi.

SENASICA, through the Campeche Plant Health State Committee, is applying management actions where the outbreak was detected in order to avoid spread of the fungi to non-detected areas.
