Subject: First reports of soybean rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi) in Nigeria and South Africa
Publicada: March 26, 2001
Source: ProMED mail
A rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi H. & P. Sydow) was observed infecting soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) for the first time in Nigeria during the 1999 growing season, and in South Africa during 2001. The rust was discovered on soybean farms in the Oniyo area of Nigeria, and in KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. This rust causes chlorosis and lesions on leaves, leading to defoliation and reduced seed weight.
