Report:
In December 2007, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency confirmed the presence of the pyralid moth Duponchelia fovealis Zeller in three Ontario ornamental plant greenhouses. The moth is of south European/North African origin and is known to feed on a wide range of ornamentals (potted plants and cut flowers) and vegetable plants. Damage is caused by larval feeding which may result in losses in productivity or a downgrading of the quality class of the produce.
Regulatory controls have been placed on the three facilities. Integrated eradication and monitoring protocols have been developed and implemented in the facilities.
Under IPPC standards, Duponchelia fovealis is considered to be a pest that is transient, actionable, and under eradication in Canada.
