Title: Pale Cyst Nematode (Globodera pallida) - Addition of regulated area in Idaho

Report: On August 18, the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed an additional detection of PCN in a potato production field encompassing 150 acres in Bonneville County, Idaho. This brings the total infested area to 1,425 acres in 11 fields in the two Idaho counties already under regulation. The morphological and molecular analyses of suspect cyst samples from this field conducted by USDA’s Agricultural Research Service and APHIS confirmed the presence of PCN. After all traces are completed, which is expected this fall, APHIS will post on its website any additional acres that need to be regulated due to their primary association with the 150 infested acres.

The cysts were collected as part of ongoing delimiting survey of the 164 acres reported infested in March 2011. This field is approximately 2 miles from the nearest infested field which is also located in Bonneville County, Idaho.

In accordance with the PCN regulations (7 CFR 301.86), APHIS added this additional infested field to the PCN quarantine area on August 26, 2011, effective immediately. This brings the total regulated area (infested and associated fields) to 7,414 acres. Accordingly, restrictions on the interstate movement of PCN regulated articles from these areas are now required. APHIS will publish a notice of the change to the quarantine boundaries in the Federal Register.

Under IPPC Standards, Globodera pallida is considered a pest that is present: only in some areas and subject to official control in the United States.
