Report:
The National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) informed about the eradication of the Mediterranean fruit fly [Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann)] in the municipalities of Armería, Colima, Comala, Coquimatlán, Ixtlahuacán, Manzanillo, Tecomán and Villa de Álvarez, state of Colima, Mexico as more than three Medfly life-cycles have elapsed with no detections as a result of the implementation of phytosanitary measures.
On April 6, 2021, an adult specimen of Mediterranean fruit fly [Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann)] was detected in the Port of Manzanillo, Colima. As a result of delimiting actions, the pest was reported on 169 km2 of urban area, affecting only the fruit of tropical almond (Terminalia catappa, L.), consequently, a regulated area of 4,289 km2 was established. We further established risk management measures including pest monitoring with traps with specific lures, host fruit sampling and eradication measures including the use of hydrolyzed protein bait stations, fruit destruction, aerial and ground release of sterile Mediterranean fruit flies alongside ground release of the parasitoid Diachasmimorpha longicaudata as well as ground spraying with Spinosad-laced selective baits. In addition, seven verification and inspection stations were operational in the area.
Senasica, through the Plant Health Directorate, informs that in accordance with the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures 8 Determination of pest status in an area, the phytosanitary status of the Mediterranean fruit fly [Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) is absent: eradicated from the municipalities of Armería, Colima, Comala, Coquimatlán, Ixtlahuacán, Manzanillo, Tecomán and Villa de Álvarez, state of Colima, Mexico.
